Goatscaping: your questions answered
If you were around in the early days of Two Step Farm, you may recollect that the first thing we did here was goatscaping. (We even launched the community with a Goatbreaking event.) And now that we’re starting work on the second part of the community, we’ve brought the herd back for another round of goatscaping. But if you aren’t familiar with the history of Two Step, you may be wondering to yourself, “What the h-e-double-toothpicks is goatscaping?”
Allow us to explain …
What is goatscaping?
Goatscaping is the practice of using goats to naturally clear brush, invasive plants, vines and unwanted vegetation instead of herbicides or heavy machinery. It is basically turning a whole bunch of goats loose on a piece of land and letting them eat whatever they like. The thing is, what you and I call a noxious weed is what a goat thinks of as a gourmet salad. A stand of tall trees clogged up with undergrowth is one big goat smorgasbord. So a few days after releasing the goats, you discover they’ve eaten all the bad stuff and left all the pretty trees.
What are the advantages of goatscaping?
Well, the typical way to deal with weeds and brush is to use chemicals and clear-cutting. Both of those conventional methods are indiscriminate. That is, they kill everything. The beautiful thing about goatscaping is, it gets rid of the plants you don’t want and saves the plants you do want, all without the use of poison or big fuel-guzzling equipment.
Does goatscaping have any side-effects?
Yes, but they’re all beneficial. As the goats wander about the property, their sharp little hoofs help aerate and till the soil, preparing the land for seeding. And of course, they also leave behind some, you know, “fertilizer.”
But isn’t goatscaping slow and inefficient compared to other methods?
Far from it. Chemicals can take a month or more to kill weeds and brush. Our latest goatscaping effort cleared 62 acres of land in just 16 days. Those little guys are brush-bustin’, weed-eatin’ machines. (Then again, if your job was to spend all day chowing down on your favorite foods, you’d probably work pretty efficiently, too.)
Is this why Two Step Farm has a goat as its mascot?
Sort of. But it’s bigger than that. It harkens back to the late 1800s, when a goat named “Monty” became a beloved citizen and mascot of our hometown of Montgomery, TX. But the goat is also the symbol of how, at Two Step Farm, we try to do things in a smarter way. It’s why we planned our community to let you walk more and drive less. It’s why the homes here are designed to save energy and water. And it’s why we approached our landscaping with the intent to preserve our big heritage trees, which required a little help from our four-hoofed friends. Plus, they’re just so flippin’ cute.
